10th Annual Turkey Feast Knap-In, Millersylvania, Washington. November 3 and 4

Holly and Mick Hill, the hosts, always have a potluck centered around a fantastic turkey dinner at this knap-in.  Get ready for Thanksgiving by attending the Millersylvania Knap-In south of Olympia, WA.  In the past Holly Hill arranged a pre-Thanksgiving pot-luck feast; I think Holly provided most of the feast.  The potluck will be held approximately 1:00 pm Saturday.  Millersylvania is a Washington State Park with a picnic shelter complete with fireplace and a kitchen. As usual the knapping and dinner will be around the huge covered indoor fireplace or kitchen wood stoves so we will all be warm and dry
regardless of weather.  Bring a potluck item for Saturday, camp stool or lawn chair, and the usual knappers stuff, tools, displays, barters, sales, etc.!  Holly will be bringing FABRIC and the TURKEY – Mick.  The campground has a small overnight camping fee and there are hookups, bathrooms, and hot quarter-operated showers. The kitchen cabin has electricity for lights and wall socket use, but water has been turned off for winter weathering. Jugs of water will be available for drinking, etc. There is a bathroom a short distance from the cabin also.

Directions:

To get to the park, take I-5 to Exit 95.  Then follow signs to park entrance, Kitchen #1.  A hike path is located at the first parking lot to cabin near Deep Lake.  We will have wheelbarrows available again for transporting supplies from vehicles to the cabin. Thanks for your efforts to follow park rules. If necessary, there is a back road to
deliver heavy goods or to meet needs of those who don't hike. For those who have attended, please watch for others trying to find the path to the cabin!

Call Mick and Holly for more directions: (360) 493-8439 or e-mail at:  HYPERLINK "mailto:mickhill@comcast.net" mickhill@comcast.net.   Please let them know if you are going.

REPORTS:

Quartzsite Knap-In, Quartzsite, Arizona, January 1 through February 28

By Richard and Joan

Another great knapping era has gone by.  If you procrastinated and missed the 12 years of the Quartzsite Knap-in., you’re out of luck.  This was the last Quartzsite Knap-in.  What a fun 12 years we had.  Mary and Jerry are calling it quits after 12 years of hard work, time and financial investment.  I know that the regulars that hang around for a month or two thank Mary and Jerry for putting up with us.  We will miss the all-day free coffee and goodies (donuts, cakes, pastries, cookies) that were always in the kitchen.  We will also miss the “road kill” stew at the annual potluck.  Thanks to all the ladies – and a couple of the knappers - who helped make lunches to feed the core knapper group!

The weather was perfect this year.  We had about of week of morning frost  in early January and a day of two of overnight pipe freezing but the day temperatures were in the range of 60  - 80 during the two-month period.  Jerry and Mary came down at the beginning of January and several knappers were waiting for them to set up Mary’s tepee, her workshop, the kitchen and the covering for the knapping area.  Jerry has enough covering for about 500 square feet for the knapping area.

Knapping started the next day with about 7 knappers who were the core knappers who stayed for a month or two.  There were about 70 knappers who came for several days throughout the two months.  Knappers came from New York, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Missouri, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana, the Dakotas, Utah, Canada and Mexico.  I don’t want to brag, people, but Montana had the best representation for the core knappers at this knap-in.

As always, knappers arrive and then disappear for a day or two shopping for rocks.  Then they return and start knapping.  Lots of the Quartzsite purchased rocks were then heat treated at the knap-in.  The heated rocks were then tested and were made into points.  Lots of well done percussion and pressure flaking points were produced.

This year’s knapping emphasis was on different jigs for fluting and pressure flaking, and making eccentrics.

There were lots of fluting attempts made using Tony Soares’s two-piece hardwood jig. Tony developed this simple jig which he thought that early man could have used.  Tony doesn’t mind other knappers copying his jig.  All he wants is the credit for developing it.  If you are interested in making one, write to 9fingers for a picture of his jig.

Ray Alt also had a two-piece jig made out of antler which he thought that early man used.  One piece of the antler has a hole in it, and the other is used as a pressure flaker.  Ray thinks that the antler with the hole in it is mistaken by archeologists to be shaft straighteners.  A bunch of great flutes were made at the knap-in with both jigs.  Ray and the antler jig is in a new book titled  “Homeland: An Archaeologist’s View of Yellowstone Country’s Past” by Larry Lahren.

Tim Monson brought a portable pressure flaking jig that he developed by modifying the more permanent type eyebolt jigs.  This jig fits on the lap of a knapper sitting down on a chair.  The jig gives the mechanical advantage required to do pressure flaking without the strain to your arm.  Like Tony, Tim doesn’t mind if knappers copy his jig.  Just give him the credit for developing it.  If you are interested in making Monson’s jig, e-mail Richard Urata for a hand-sketch plan of the jig.

Several knappers, among them 9fingers and Philip Churchill produced a bunch of eccentrics that were eagerly purchased.  9fingers also put a couple on Ebay during the knap-in and sold them for almost twice the price when bought at the knap-in.

There were plenty of activies for the ladies attending the knap-in.  There were jewelry lessons – beading projects – lots of shopping and don’t forget the weekly poker/margarita parties in Jack and Marilyn Hemphill’s trailer ϑ   Tepee night was held about once a week for the ladies to relax and visit around a nice fire in the Tepee.  Sometimes the knappers got a little cold outside and retreated to warmer trailers on site.

The Annual Potluck was held on the Quartzsite “Pow Wow” weekend.  Approximately 60 people were there eating all the goodies.  Even with all the people, there were lots of left-overs.  Jerry produced the “road kill” stew. (Every year, Mary and Jerry have a heated discussion on what to put into the stew.)  Other participants also brought main dishes, salads and deserts.  The meal was fantastic!!!

After dinner several games of goat and 10 speed were played.  9fingers won half of the games. (He thinks that the other knappers let him win.)

At the end of February, several knappers helped 9fingers and Mary take down the camp for the last time.  We all said our good byes and left.  Memories of the fun times will last forever.

Thanks again Mary and 9fingers for all the good times we had at the knap-ins.

Winter Break Knap-In, Seattle, Washington, Sunday, February 3

By Dave Pheling

The Winter Break KI is the oldest of the PSK Knap-In’s and, until this year, has always been held at the WSU Snohomish County Extension Office.  This year, Jim Dennis, a new member (and my nephew) volunteered his shop near Granite Falls for our event.  Although it’s a bit farther to go for our more “southern” members, it turned out to be a good move as our regular spot turned out to be unavailable due to construction.

We had about 20 members and visitors show up throughout the day on the first drizzly Saturday of February at Jim D.’s nice, warm, fire-heated shop.  Plenty of room for everyone and good lighting!  Of the “OLD TIMERS”, Jim Smith, Jim Miller and BOTH sets of Hill’s made it (at least those are the ones who signed the roster).  Mick H. did not break a lot of rock as he was recovering from being broken, himself from a fight with a steel post (the post won….)!  Lots of sharing of information, teaching  & “show & tell”, as usual, and LOTS of hot coffee and snacks.  We even did a bit of bow-building in the back.

Next year we hope to hold this event in the same place, though I think we’re going to try the LAST Saturday of JANUARY in '08 to see if we can lure in members who are always busy on the Feb. date.

cheers,

dave.....

REPORTS:

Third Annual Western Oregon Knap-In, Illahee Flats, Oregon, May 26 thru June 3

By  Brad Baughman

The 3rd annual North Umpqua Knap-in was held at Illahee Flats, near Dry Creek, on the beautiful North Umpqua river, from Memorial Day weekend through the following weekend. This is the normal date for this event so you can put it on your schedule for next year.

Illahee Flats is a traditional Indian gathering area for the Umpqua, Piute, Warm Springs, Klamath, Modock and Rogue tribes.  All knapping is done on tarps to keep from contaminating the site with modern debitage.

As usual we were constantly entertained by the elk, deer. coyotes and wild turkeys in the meadow.  The weather was exceptional, warm nights and sunny days. We really didn't need to even put up the tarp shelters.

The quality of knappers that attended were, as usual, unbelievable!  Among a few of the notables were ... Jim Hopper, Steve Allely, Stewart Murdock and Emory Coons.  There were many "demonstrations" of different skills.  Emory Coons showed us how to make a 27 inch dacite spear point. Steve Allely embarrassed us all with his expertise when he made the long-winged delicate Rogue River points, and as usual Brad Baughman brought his generator and grinders to demonstrate the basics of flake over grinding.

This year the long distance award went to Oklahoma!  In past years it has gone as far as Massachusetts.

There is no local stone available, so the dacite and obsidian was provided from Glass Buttes, gathered (by Baughman-Coons and company) during the Glass Buttes knap-in.

A great time was had by all!  We hope you can all come to the 4th annual gathering next year!!

A One-day Knap-In to initiate the new knapping season will be held on Saturday, (Not Sunday), January 26, (Tentatively) hosted by Dave Pehling.  The knap-in will run from 10:00 am 'till we get tired’.

It will be at my nephew's house in Granite Falls as he has a large walled-in workshop that we can heat and use as we like.

Glass Butte Gathering, Glass Butte, Oregon, March 22 Through March 30

(This is not a PSK event)

Here in the Northwest it's the largest, longest, oldest, and coldest running knap-in. The term "hardcore" suddenly springs to mind. It's very aboriginal, very warm-hearted abo's in what can be a very COLD setting. I best repeat that in case you missed it - that's C-O-L-D!! (you have been warned....) Even at that I haven't missed one in a dozen + years. It's always been a "high energy / cabin fever breaker / icebreaker / start of the season" event. (couple hundred people or so..) A lot of things are always going on and it's always busy and it's always laid back (?). Also, if you have other interests in all the
other aboriginal skill sets: food/fire/water/tanning/cordage/herbs/basketry/etcetcetc. - this is one of the best for networking/sharing/learning. Again, the weather is THE wildcard for this event – true to form, the weather at last year’s event kept up to it’s reputation for which this Knap-in has been famous for...  Our Main Man (who says he's not in charge) is : Jim Riggs, PO. Box 627, Wallowa, OR. 97885, no phone / no E-mail. For more details (unvarnished and varnished) and possible ride/sharing/etc. gimmie a call: (360)-493-8439 or HYPERLINK "mailto:mickhill@comcast.net"mickhill@comcast.net.  Pictures say it all! - check out the last couple years at Roadkills site (KnapIn Pics) at: HYPERLINK "http://www.neoanderthal.com/index.html"http://www.neoanderthal.com/index.html

REPORTS:

Moses Lake Knap-In, Moses Lake , Washington, August 31 through September 3

By Richard and Joan

This is early September, Labor Day weekend, and time for another Moses Lake Knap-In.  The weather cooperated this year with cooler temperatures than in the previous years.  We all stayed in the best RV park in Moses Lake.  There were 8 RV’s parked in the nicely cut lawn of Ken - ‘Eagle Beak – Two Chicken’ - and Adele Calvert’s Lakeside property.  What a great place to be at on the Labor Day weekend.  Oh, did I mention that there was also a Knap-In?

There were about 15 knappers and approximately 30 people at the knap-In.  There are about 10 ‘regulars’ that attend this knap-in.  Joan and I got there early on Thursday afternoon expecting to be one of the ‘early birds’.  To our surprise, we were one of the last arrivals.  The lawn was already packed with RV’s.  We parked our trailer, said our hello’s and BS’d the rest of the day.

Knapping started on Friday with about 8 knappers percussing and pressure flaking, making some excellent points.  Dick Kocan decided to just do pressure flaking this year and made 8 to 10 top quality points.  Jim Rayner also did some pressure flaking and showed me an excellent point made out of the ‘China Hollow’ material.  As usual, Bill Thomas was there with his pressure flaking, very quiet, but making lots of points.  He started to do percussion and finished some great points by percussion.  Dave Graves, an Ole timer, but new to this knap-in was also pressure flaking some great looking points.  Greg ‘Nanook’ Miller was there teasing the other knappers.  Greg is known as the ‘Sun Point’ maker.  A sun point is a round point like a disc.  Jim Smith, always busy, produced a bunch of excellent points.  Jim’s percussion work is super.  I think he produced the most percussed points.

Two community points were started today and was finished on Saturday with about 10 knappers working on them.  One of these points was given to the hosts at the potluck on Sunday and the other was auctioned off.

I brought some knives with knife mounts and some pipes for ‘show and tell’.  Bill Thomas brought out some of his pressure flaked blades and points and a knife with beaded handle beaded by Warren “Smitty” Smith.  Warren also displayed his beadwork on some walking sticks.  Fantastic work!  Missing were the displays by Dick Kocan of the Northwest Coast Indian harpoon tips and different fish hooks.  Also missing were the works of Jim Rayner’s inlayed handle knives and Karen Rayner’s beadwork.  Karen won first place for her display in  the Bitterroot Valley Gem and Mineral Show.  Bring them next year Dick, Jim and Karen.  I hope that others will also bring show and tell items next year.  I sure enjoy seeing the different items that other people produce.

Many more knappers showed up on Saturday.   Lee Olson brought and knapped several of his large slabs.  Dan Stevenson, ‘Dan from Spokane’ brought his new knapping tool inventions and showed and explained how to use them.  He brings new inventions every year.  A pleasant surprise came when Ralph Groom showed up.  He has been fighting some life-threatening medical problems lately.  A newcomer, Don Farley from Montana showed up this year with a pressure flaking jig that he displayed and made some points with.  Several knappers were taking dimensions of the jig.  Everyone was busy making points and BS’ing.  Even Calvert picked up some rocks and beat on them.  I was watching Calvert!

For the ‘better halves’ Saturday was the sacred Garage Sale and Farmer’s Market day.  Adele, Joan Urata, and Laura Kocan left early in the morning, even before the knappers got started.  They returned with a car full of sale finds and lots of food for dinner including rotisserie chickens that served as the main course.  Adele announced that she could get jalapenos for 38 cents a pound so I ordered 10 pounds.  They were mild and using Jim Rayners recipe, I made some jalapeno poppers for the Sunday potluck.  The rest of the ladies went shopping, did crafts in camp and prepared great dishes for an impromptu potluck Saturday evening.  Adele surprised Jim Rayner with a birthday cake at dinner - of course not telling anyone that it was her Birthday too!  We all enjoyed a great dinner down by the lake.

Sunday started with some early morning rock pounding that lasted until 1:00 pm.  More excellent points were made and more stories were told.  At 1:00 everyone watched the catering truck arrive and we all started to go to the lakeside for the pot luck.  There is a large shade tree about 40 feet from the lakeshore where all the potlucks are held.  The shade from the tree is large enough to shade everyone.  The main dish was BBQ pork ribs – plenty of them.  We also had lots of bread, may different kinds of salads, cakes, pies, cobblers, and home made ice cream that Adele traditionally makes.  This year she made peach and vanilla – some of the best I have ever tasted.  Even with my diabetes, I had to have seconds on the ice cream – more insulin shots!  There were lots of leftovers and we ate them on Monday - morning, lunch and dinner.

An auction was held after the pot luck to raise some money to help the hosts pay for the food and the port-a-potties.  Auction items were donated by fellow knappers.  There were points, slabs and a pipe.  Bill Thomas donated a bunch of things including a point, arrowhead necklace and a slab of the opaque Burns Green.

I’m sorry if missed mentioning some of you that were there but being old and feeble minded, I cannot remember all that happened at the knap-in.

We would like to thank the girls for all their work they do to make the pot lucks work while we knappers just beat rocks.

We also like to thank Ken and Adele for putting up with us and having this knap-in every year!

Goldendale Knap-In, October 12, 13 and 14

By Ed Thomas

Our mini October K/I turned out pretty well for such short notice! We had 18 folks show up, including 7 Knappers; Myself, Frank Cearley, Dave Pehling, Jim Smith, Lee Dougherty, Jim Smith and Jim Miller. We had our traditional BBQ’d Salmon Potluck on Saturday evening with enough food left over to feed us for two more days! Jim Miller demonstrated his technique in taking pictures of his points for display on Ebay and Dave Pehling demonstrated the making of a Flemish bowstring for one of my “kid-bows”. Jim Miller also brought his little Corgey pooch, named Bee-Bee, and they spent a few early morning hours of hunting some of our local  California quail. Jim actually got two of them to make a nice sandwich for lunch! We had a great time together over the weekend.

The local fire protection district lifted our annual “burn-ban” a few days previously, which enabled us to have a genuine “white-man fire” (anyone objecting to my use of this vernacular can just tough-it) on Saturday evening. Dave Pehling did the “flint and steel” honors of lighting the fire for us. The weather was extraordinary for our K/I over the weekend. Monday evening the weather caught up with us and it has been raining off and on ever since.

My special thanks to Jim Smith for arriving on Thursday, special to help me prepare the shop building for the K/I. He also repaired some of the archery targets and placed two more out on the property. We now have 15 archery targets placed about the property. Maybe we will have a moving target ready by the May K/I!

First Fall Johannesburg Knap-In, Johannesburg, California, October 26, 27 and 28.

By Michelle Mowery

The High Desert Knap-in In Johannesburg, Ca is over but not forgotten.  On Oct 26, 27, 28 the Bakersfield Flintknappers hosted a knap-in at the home of Princess Littlefoot aka Michelle Mowery aka Petroglyph Carver. The three day event was well attended and enjoyed by all. Some absent from the event were due to the forest fires in So Calif. Others were in the hospital for various reasons. The group sends their wishes for a speedy recovery for those people. We had a moment of silence for Carol Piri whose mother passed away a few days prior to this event, so Carol was in Indianapolis.  We missed Carol greatly as she does so much for this group.  We love you, Carol.

Patrick and Tammy Ames showed up in two trucks with a BIG OLE BAR-B-Q and lots ice boxes full of food for breakfast for all for two days and dinner for all at night with TRI-TIP of which he is a master chef. He was cooking day and night, it seems. Tammy brought her most gorgeous granddaughter who stole the show by imitating everyone at what they said or did and she is less than one year old. She is a beautiful child with great big blue eye, like Patrick, and Tammy, and we all fell in love with her. It was her first trip away from home and she never said mommy one time. She had a lot of attention so she was well taken care of.

OUR ONE AND ONLY GARY PICKETT as I have referred to him for as long as I have been around, was here with bells on to demo for our knap-in and napped day and night. We had a lot of visitors as we are on hwy 395 and caught a few passers by. One gentleman from last week's Pow Wow brought Gary a bottle of champagne...good stuff..because Gary had made him a point and invited him to our knap-in.

A man emailed Michelle a few weeks ago asking if her home was still for sale and signed GARY PICKETT. Michelle ret'd email and said "what are you trying to do ...be funny?"

It turned out that there is another GARY PICKETT and he had found Michelle's website by typing in his own name for a google search and our one and only Gary Pickett's name came up on her site. He showed up at the knap-in and we have had a lot of fun over this but our Gary is still Thee One and Only because he is so sweet and cute and such a good guy.

There were many knappers here and chips were flying for two full days. We had lots of water and ice and soda for everyone and dinners at night were excellent. We invited the fire dept for dinner on Sat night. While they were here Danny Rains, as he very often does, locked the keys in his truck. We asked the firemen for help. After an hour and a half they gave up when Michelle said she would call triple A in the am. Triple A came on sunday am and in 30 seconds had the door open with a blood pressure cup, if you will, A new tool for opening car doors. Further explanation of this tool can be had by calling your auto parts store.

Gary had raised two 10 x 20 canopies, Michelle had one and there are 75 trees so we had lots of shade. The weather was superb, 65 at night and 80 days.

We are only 20 minutes from Ridgecrest and a mini market here in Johannesburg but we didn't need a thing --Patrick had brought everything we needed.

Many donations were made for dinners and we ate like kings; pies after breakfast and you name it..... we ate.

The High Desert Knap-in group in Johannesburg, Ca. would sincerely hope that you all will put us on your calendar and come one. come all.

10th Annual Turkey Feast Knap-In, Millersylvania, Washington. November 3 and 4

By Karen Rayner

Mick and Holly Hill hosted the 11th Annual Pre-Thanksgiving Knap-In and potluck feast on Saturday, November 3rd, at Millersylvania State Park.  Through some freak of nature, it was not raining.  The sun was out, the wind was calm, and it was a beautiful fall day.  It was just right for a tune from the bagpipes, thank you Mick.

The feast was enjoyed by everyone who attended.  I think we even picked up a few strays from the park.  There was lots of turkey, potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, salads, cranberries, and desserts.  There was a lot of snack stuff too.  If anyone went away hungry, they were just shy.  Thank you Holly and all those who helped by contribution and/or manpower.

There were about 30 people in attendance on Saturday, well, theat was when I quit counting to answer a higher calling, Beads and B.S..  Always nice to renew friendships with those you don’t get to see often.

Oh yeah, there were knappers there too.  I don’t know how Mick does it, but I hear he sets up the lights perfectly.  No shadows.  He’s also handy at keeping the fireplace going.  He even brought some show and tell items.  Mick gave a demonstration of percussion and Jim Miller gave one on pressure flaking, thanks guys.  I know the old flakes and the new apprentices learned and enjoyed.

Let’s hope that the weather will be as nice next year for the “Even dozen Feast and Knapp-in”.
