9th Annual Turkey Feast Knap-In, Millersylvania, Washington. November 5 and 6

Holly and Mick Hill, the hosts, always have a potluck centered around a fantastic turkey dinner at this knap-in.  Get ready for Thanksgiving by attending the Millersylvania Knap-In south of Olympia, WA.  In the past Holly Hill arranged a pre-Thanksgiving pot-luck feast; I think Holly provided most of the feast.  The potluck will be held approximately 1:00 pm Saturday.  Millersylvania is a Washington State Park with a picnic shelter complete with fireplace and a kitchen. As usual the knapping and dinner will be around the huge covered indoor fireplace or kitchen wood stoves so we will all be warm and dry
regardless of weather.  Bring a potluck item for Saturday, camp stool or lawn chair, and the usual knappers stuff, tools, displays, barters, sales, etc.!  Holly will be bringing FABRIC and the TURKEY – Mick.  The campground has a small overnight camping fee and there are hookups, bathrooms, and hot quarter-operated showers. The kitchen cabin has electricity for lights and wall socket use, but water has been turned off for winter weathering. Jugs of water will be available for drinking, etc. There is a bathroom a short distance from the cabin also.

Directions:

To get to the park, take I-5 to Exit 95.  Then follow signs to park entrance, Kitchen #1.  A hike path is located at the first parking lot to cabin near Deep Lake.  We will have wheelbarrows available again for transporting supplies from vehicles to the cabin. Thanks for your efforts to follow park rules. If necessary, there is a back road to
deliver heavy goods or to meet needs of those who don't hike. For those who have attended, please watch for others trying to find the path to the cabin!

Call Mick and Holly for more directions: (360) 357-9506 or (360) 493-8439 or e-mail at:  HYPERLINK mailto:mickhill@home.com mickhill@attbi.com or  HYPERLINK mailto:hollyhill@home.com hollyhill@attbi.com.  Please let them know if you are going.

REPORTS:

11th Annual Quartzsite Knap-In, Quartzsite, Arizona, January 1 through February 28

By Mary Webster

The Jan.-Feb. Quartzsite knap-in is the longest running knap-in in the country.  It is hosted by Jerry (Ninefingers) Calvert and Mary Webster and this was the 11th year for this two month shindig.  Knappers come from the east coast, west coast, northwest, Montana, So. Dakota, Colorado, Missouri, Canada, Texas, Georgia, Mexico and else where to attend this fun event.

Jerry and Mary arrive on Jan. 1st in their blue bus with car in tow; along with their truck and trailer with tipi poles, canopies, tarps, rocks, kilns etc.  There is always a group of knappers waiting for us and their help is invaluable in setting up camp for two months.   It is like a family reunion with lots of hugs, hand shakes and smiling faces.  It is always good to see everyone again along with welcoming the many new knappers who join the group every year.

The knap-in is held at Jenn's Place on Main St.  It is a privately owned lot where Mary and Jerry along with other knappers rent vendor spaces.  There are also limited spaces for tents and RV's and a fairly small parking lot.  The owner installed three flush toilets a few years ago for the campers and vendors.  Most of the knappers camp else where and drive over for the day.  Jenn's Place is in a residential area with businesses and homes close by.

.

With so many people gathered in one place for two months it is a wonder there hasn't been any behavior problems....until this year.  Some stuff went on that is unacceptable behavior and will not be tolerated by the owner of Jenn's Place or Jerry and Mary in the future.

Jerry's rules for the knap-in were to Show up and Have Fun!   There will be additional rules starting in 2007.  And those who do not follow the rules will be asked to leave.

 1.  According to the owner there will be no camping in the parking lot; in tents, cars, trucks or otherwise.  There is a section for camping but space is limited.  There is a free 14 day camping area near by in the desert.

 2.  There will be no  LOUD gatherings around the fire until 4:00 AM.  Please keep the noise down after 10 PM.  This is a residential area and the owner lives right behind the lot.  Please show some respect for the owner ,  his neighbors and the other vendors and campers.

 3.  The toilets are there for the vendors and campers convenience.  Please help to keep them clean.  Why anyone would stuff rolls of toilet paper into the tanks and the cardboard rolls in the toilets to make them overflow is beyond comprehension.  But someone or someones did and the toilets had to be shut down on the busiest weekend of the knap-in.

 4.   Please don't come to the knap-in if all you want to do is get drunk , cause problems and vomit all over the bathrooms.  How awful is that.

 5.  PLEASE leave your kids home if they cannot be kept in control.  Jenn's place is NOT a playground.   The owners Mother lives in the back lot, which is a private drive.  No one paid attention to that and shot blow darts at his mothers house.  A rabbit was also tortured and killed.  The owner had to speak to the kids many times but he was ignored. There were numerous complaints from area businesses about the kids and their bikes in their parking lots and the police even spoke to them once.  This is NOTacceptable and will NOT be tolerated.  The owner has made it quite clear that unruly kids will not be welcomed on his property at future knap-ins and will be asked to leave.

Jerry and Mary want everyone who comes to their knap-in to have a memorable experience.  It is a unique knap-in which most everyone who attends can attest to.   Jerry is available most days to give free lessons.  His kiln is always cooking rocks for anyone who want rocks cooked, at no charge.  He teaches arrow and cordage making (flemish bow strings) and welcomes anyone who has their own information to share.  Ninefingers is an ABO at heart.

Mary has the coffee pot on just about 24/7 in her newly remodeled coffee shack.  There usually is some kind of goody available...either made by Mary, the knappers wives or from the bakery.  Mary's tipi is a center point of the knap-in and this year a cozy gathering place for the Flintknapper’s Floozies.

So, with all that said, Jerry and Mary hope to see everyone again next year with a new awareness of what their knap-in is all about.  First and foremost is respect shown for the owner of Jenn's Place who has been so gracious in having them there all these years.  Let’s show the owner that we appreciate his generousity.

See ya next year.

COMMENT: Mary’s diplomatic, I’m (Richard Urata) not.  We almost lost a place for future knap-ins because of the problems with the kids and the drunks!  That’s got to stop!  The owner was on the verge of not renting the knap-in spot to us in the future.

In Memory of Homer "Sonny" Owens, 11/28/1935 - 3/11/2006

By Mary Webster

The many Knappers that attend the knap-in in Quartzsite, Arizona will surely remember Sonny Owens.  Sonny loved to tell stories and could talk for hours on end without stopping while he and the boys chipped away on their arrow heads.    Sonny loved to knap and he enjoyed taking the boys rock hunting up to Burro Creek, Chino Valley, Anderson Mine (Old Uranium Mine) and Ashfork in Northern Arizona.  They trecked into some pretty rough places and always made a full day of it.

Sonny didn't attend the knap-in this year.  He spent the past year in the hospital with serious heart problems and his heart finally gave out on March 11, 2006 in the VA Hospital in Prescott, Arizona.  He will be missed at future knap-ins in Quartzsite.

By Richard Urata

I remember Sonny as a rough person that had more experiences that several men put together.  He was the most unselfish person, giving information of the rock areas.  In his younger days, he traveled with the last prospector that used a burro.  He was a historian of the Arizona Desert.  Whenever we went on rock trips, he kept the trip interesting be telling us the history of the different areas that we were traveling through.  A bunch of us will always remember Sonny taking us to ”the trip to hell”.  On that day we traveled 550 miles of which 250 was on dirt-pasture roads.  We opened and closed 11 gates going in and ended up just south of the Grand Canyon.  We teased him about it for several years after the trip.

There will be a void at the Quartzsite Knap-in.

Winter Break Knap-In, Seattle, Washington, Sunday, February 5

By Dave Pheling

The 2006 Winter Break Knap-In at the WSU Extension office in Everett, Washington was a rather small gathering as is usual for this often-chilly event.  However, the "Great Spirit" was good to us this year and we were able to set our tarps out in the sunshine and break rocks in relative comfort.

We had a couple new folks show up to see what it was all about so we may have some new faces at future KI's.

Jim Miller brought some of his excellent work knapped out of "fire obsidian", along with a magazine article on the subject.  Jim also brought several copies of his new CD book,  "The Flintknapper's Guide to Rock" which is now available for purchase.

Tentatively, this event will be held in Granite Falls next year as we should have access to a large HEATED and well-lit garage by then.

12th Annual Quartzsite Knap-In, Quartzsite, Arizona, January 1 through February 28

This is the longest Knap-In in the United States, maybe the world.  Hosted by Nine Fingers and Mary Webster, the Knap-In will be located on the property on the west side of the bakery.  Look for a two-toned aluminum and blue colored bus.

Quartzsite is on Interstate 10, about 20 miles east of the California border.  To get there take I-10 to Quartzsite.  There are two off ramps, one on the west side and one on the east side of town.  From either direction, take the first exit, and drive through town.  The town is on the north side of the freeway and there is only one main street.  Look for the bakery on the south side of the main street.  The knap-in is on the adjacent property on the west side of the bakery.  It is approximately 0.5 miles from the east off ramp and approximately 1.5 miles from the west off ramp.  There will be the general store on the north side of the street, across the bakery.

There are RV parks and in-town campsites. Out-of-town, BLM runs camp sites for long term camping – like months – with dump stations, or free camp sites if you stay less than 14 days.  For more information, see the Quartzsite website:

Glass Butte Gathering, Glass Butte, Oregon, March 24 Through April 1

(This is not a PSK event)

Here in the Northwest it's the largest, longest, oldest, and coldest running knap-in. The term "hardcore" suddenly springs to mind. It's very aboriginal, very warm-hearted abo's in what can be a very COLD setting. I best repeat that in case you missed it - that's C-O-L-D!! (you have been warned....) REPORTS:

Forth Annual Goldendale Knap-In, Goldendale, Washington, May 19 through 21

By Richard and Joan Urata

Joan and I started from Montana early Thursday morning.  The temperature was expected to be in the lower 90’s even in Montana.  After about 10 hours of driving in the heat, we got to Biggs, Oregon.  While re-fueling, the clouds came over us and lightning, thunder, strong winds and large drops of rain started.  The temperature dropped into the high 70’s.  We got to Goldendale to the Thomas’s Estate, known as “Thomas Hollow”, in about 45 minutes and by that time the storm was over.  Through the rest of the weekend, the temperature was between 65 to 80 degrees due to the occasional thunderstorms.

Ed and Loretta expected weather like this and had a 10 X 40 feet canvas covered area for knapping.  We also used his large shop for a kitchen and BS-ing area.

There were several knappers there when we arrived – Emory Coons, Phil Churchill, Bill McJunkin, Dave Graves, Lee Olsen to name a few.  By Friday there were 24 knappers.

On Saturday, I organized a 10-speed game and a 2-inch goat game.  These games are played for fun and to help the host offset the cost of the food and porta potties for the knap-in.  Half of the pot goes to the winner and half goes to the host.

Two rules were defined for the 2-inch goat game: (1) The Knapper must honestly try to get a 2-inch flake – not just break the rock into pieces and (2) When swinging to get a flake – if the rock is completely missed, the knapper has another try.  If he clips the rock, it counts as a hit.

There were six participants in the 10-speed game with Jim Miller the winner.  He made a great Burns Green obsidian point.

There were 11 participants in the 2-inch goat game with Emory Coons the winner.

Knappers brought show-and-tell products with them:  Joe Higgins brought a buffalo hide that he tanned, Phil Churchill brought some blades, eccentrics and some Danish Daggers,  Emory Coons brought some blades, points, and an eagle effigy, Stu Murdock brought some pyrographic – wooden handled knives and some jaw-boned handled knives, Harvey Zacker brought a war club, Ken Kurfurst brought some super arrowheads.

The Saturday potluck featured BBQ Salmon provided by Ed and Loretta.  Others brought vegetable, fruit, potato and macaroni salads, Elk Chile, subway type sandwiches and all kinds of pies and cakes for deserts.  The food was fantastic.

An auction was held after the dinner.  All auction items were made and donated by the attending knappers.  Items such as: Jasper from the local area, points, knives, war clubs, arrows were auctioned off.  The highlight of the auction was a Danish Dagger made from Keokuck material and made by Phil Churchill.  All of the 10-speed points were also auctioned off.

Two “community” points were started Sunday morning but only one was completed.  No one knows what happened to the second one!!!!  I wonder who broke it!!  About 8 knappers signed it and it was presented to the host.

Before we realized it, it was Sunday afternoon and it was time to leave the knap-in.  Some of the knappers planned to stay a couple of days longer to go and collect rocks in the area.

It was a great knap-in – a great memory maker – thanks to Ed, Loretta and their family.

COMING EVENTS:

HYPERLINK http://www.quartzsite.com http://www.quartzsite.com.   For those who want to camp in the same RV park as the knap-in, (Jenn’s Place) contact Gary Bower, (909) 240-6403. If you prefer a hotel, they are available at Blythe, California, 20 miles away and at Parker, Arizona, 30 miles away.  There is also a new “Super 8” motel in Quartzsite.  For more information call Nine Fingers or Mary at (928) 899-5495, e-mail:  HYPERLINK "mailto:9fingers@commspeed.net" 9fingers@commspeed.net .

Winter Break Knap-In, Seattle, Washington, Saturday, February 3

A One-day Knap-In to initiate the new knapping season will be held on Saturday, (Not Sunday), Feb. 3, hosted by Dave Pehling.  The knap-in will run from 10:00 am 'till we get tired’.

This year, it will be at my nephew's house in Granite Falls as he has a large walled-in workshop that we can heat and use as we like.  At the County facility, where we have had it in the past, we have to watch what we do...

We'll have the tarp set up as well as a bow-bench and tools if anyone wants to work on a stave (BYO, though I may also have a couple available....)

Directions from Everett are as follows...

From I-5 at Everett, turn onto US-2 E toward SNOHOMISH..  Stay in the left lane over the trestle and merge onto WA-204 E via the ramp on the LEFT toward LAKE STEVENS.

At the top of the long hill, Turn LEFT onto WA-9 .

Go about 1.7 miles and Turn RIGHT onto WA-92 (at the 3rd stoplite)

Go about 7.8 miles and Turn LEFT onto JORDAN RD, just before you get into Granite Falls.

Stay on Jordan, cross the Stilli river bridge, (about a mile) and take the 3rd drive (I think) on the left.  I'll have a PSK sign out so you shouldn't miss it.  If you go over a mile past the bridge, you've gone too far.  If you need directions while driving, I'll have my cell phone on -- 425-327-8034

For more information, you can contact me at pehling@netzero.net or phone 360-691-7902.

Moses Lake Knap-In, Moses Lake , Washington, September 1 through 4, Labor Day Weekend

By Richard and Joan

The best RV Park in Moses Lake is where this knap-in is held.  It’s at Adele and Eagle Beak – Two Chicken’s, estate by the lake.  There were seven big RVs there and lots of room for more.

The knappers started arriving Thursday afternoon and by Saturday there were about 15 knappers.  Eagle Beak expanded the knapping area by building a 10 by 15 foot metal carport for shade.  The cover really helps when the temperature starts rising.  Non-knappers spent the afternoons under the large shade tree down by the lake.  It was a popular place for crafting during the day and there was a great view of activities on the lake.

The BSing started Thursday evening and the knapping really started on Friday morning.  There were several new knappers this year.  Most of the regulars were also there.  Two regulars that did not make it were Greg Greger and Ralph Groom.  We sure missed them.  Lots of mighty fine points were made and several knappers brought displays.  Dick Kocan brought his Northern Coastal Native American type fish hooks and harpoon points.  Richard Urata brought his stone pipes and knives. Jim Rayner brought some knives and display boxes with arrowhead inlays.

Saturday was a big day for the knappers and for their ‘better half’.  The ladies went to the garage sales early and finished up the morning at the Farmers Market.  The knappers were busy making points until the Potluck luncheon (that goes on till dinner) at 1:00. Adele and Eagle Beak provided the BBQ pork ribs, corn, macaroni salad, vegetable salad and rolls brought in by a caterer.  The knappers added their desserts, different types of salads and side dishes.  Adele topped off everything with her fresh homemade ice cream.

After the luncheon, the knappers slowly returned to the knapping area and started to do some knapping ?? napping??, or both.  Adele and some of the girls went to the annual ‘Concert in the Park’.  The rest of us gathered down by the lake enjoying the cool of the evening until Greg Miller got a call that his cattle were loose.  How many knappers does it take to head off a group of critters trying to make their escape in the dark of night???

Sunday was a full day of knapping.  A community point was made for the hosts.  Leftovers from the potluck were brought out for every meal – and we kept eating the food.

Monday was a day of just BSing before packing up for the trip home.  Thanks to our SUPER hosts Adele and Eagle Beak Calvert for everything – a place to gather, great food, good company, etc.
